What is a good embroidery machines for beginners
This can be quite a difficult question to answer. Some people will say you shouldn’t spend any real money on a machine when just starting out. In my opinion those people are wrong.
There is no point getting all hyped for your new hobby and then buying a duff machine just because it’s on the cheap side. The machine was cheap for a reason.
Here are a few things I would consider when buying an embroidery machine for a beginner:
- Easy to setup and use.
- Make sure the machine is built by a leading manufacturer.
- Don’t cheap out, seriously, you will regret it.
- Will it last beyond the beginner phase.
As you can see choosing the best embroidery machine for a beginner is just like choosing any other product. A little bit of research and careful consideration is what you need.
So you have decided to take the plunge and get yourself an embroidery machine. As a beginner you will be wary of spending too much on your new machine. Some machines can be very expensive. However, with a bit of shopping around you can find high quality machines at affordable prices.
When buying embroidery machines, the saying “You get what you pay for” rings true. The machines I have reviewed for you are comfortably in the mid-price range, from established manufacturers and feature everything you need to get started in your new hobby.
The Brother SE400 is a fantastic machine for those new to the world of embroidery. Easy to operate and understand all of its great features, while being versatile enough to work as a machine for advanced users.
At under $300 the SE400 is an affordable machine and it packs all the features you would expect from any machine that can cost upwards of $1000. As with all Brother products it comes with a 25 year guarantee and that excellent Brother build-quality.
As a combination machine it can sew and quilt at a high quality, luckily it also embroiders to that same high level. You might be a beginner but after a little experimentation and learning your embroidery will look beautiful and professional.
The high quality backlit LCD touch-screen allows you to select stitches, organise designs and even edit patterns with ease. This might sound complicated but on-screen instructions guide you through this process making it easy for even the most confused of beginners.

From automatic needle threading to a drop-in bobbin system, your machine will be ready to work in under 10 minutes. After a little familiarisation the entire setup can take you around 5 minutes, more time for the fun stuff and less time with the fiddly boring bits.
One of the main reasons I love this machine so much for those new to embroidery is that the machine will last as you leave the beginner phase behind you. Computer connectivity means that whatever pattern or design you wish to embroider is only a download away.
Topping this machine off is the full range of included accessories providing everything you need to get started. The SE400 is an excellent starter machine, I am confident that you will agree after you experience all it has to offer.
